Plen G. Smith

Plen Smith Born: 2-25-1929

On August 29th, 2023, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ welcomed Plen G. Smith to his new eternal home. Plen was 94 years old this past February. He was born to parents Herbert Jesse Smith and Margaret Ann Fields. He had eleven siblings: Juanita Page, Dorothy Andrews, Annie Lawrence, Margaret Hensley, Pauline Urbain, Rose Gertrude Mann, Roy Smith, Jesse Smith, Herbert Smith, Robert Smith, and Daniel Smith.

Plen was a wonderful man who was a faithful husband, father, and friend. He grew up in West Terre Haute and later moved to Terre Haute where he went on to marry his next-door sweetheart Freda Ilene Cannady in 1947. He always said when he first looked at Freda, “It was love at first sight!” The couple later moved back to West Terre Haute and went on to have three children- Linda A. Hooper, Plen J. Smith, and Patricia S. Smith. They also have six grandchildren- Cindy M. El Amari, and Scott I. Hooper, Jennifer L. Balka, Brandie J. Lasure, Plen J. Smith III, Sylas W. Smith and eight great grandchildren- Christian C. Pohlar, Cecilia A. Dillard, Tailar R. Daugherty, Colin W. C. Daugherty, Mason S. Smith, Clay S. Smith, and Nolan P. Smith, and Zahra I. El Amari.

Plen worked most of his life in roofing and was an innovative and highly successful roofing contractor.  He cared deeply about his family, friends, and country. Plen was always someone you could go to for honest answers, solid advice and count on in times of need. He was a soft-spoken man with a heart of gold and his kind smile would always let you know he was glad to see you. After retiring, he enjoyed gardening, working around the house, and raising chickens. His presence, love, and support will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 10:00 AM, with Pastor Dennis Leek officiating.  Burial will follow in Rosehill Cemetery.  Visitation is scheduled for Saturday from 9:00 AM -10:00 AM in the funeral home.
