David R. Shaffer, Sr.

David R. Shaffer, Sr. 84, passed away on December 10, 2023 in his home surrounded by his family.  He was born on September 8, 1939 to Charles Schaffer, Sr. and Rose Crowley Schaffer.

David is survived by four children; Christina “Tina” Atkinson (Larry, Sr.), David Shaffer, Jr. (Lynn), Bradley “BK” Shaffer (Robin), and Steven Shaffer (Cindy), as well as nine grandchildren; Larry Atkinson, Jr. (Brittany), Tyler Atkinson, Austin Ibe, Tra’ Ibe, Rachelle Hillhouse (Jeremy), Rebecca Keller (Jacob), Renee Roberts, Emily Shaffer, and Rhyan Shaffer.  He is also survived by seven great grandchildren; Easton Atkinson, Blaine Atkinson, Casen Atkinson, Hailey Hillhouse, Peyton Keller, Aria Keller, and Able Keller, his brother Charles Schaffer, Jr. (Judy), and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Harry Schaffer.

David is a graduate of Schulte High School and a veteran of the United States Army where he served as a military policeman in Germany from January of 1959 to March of 1962 during the Berlin Crisis.  He is a veteran of the VFW Post # 6574 and the American Legion Post # 501.  Dave is also a 50 year retired member of the Plumbers and Steamfitter Local # 157.  He loved his family very much and loved spending time with them.  He was also a very talented piano player and enjoyed playing for others.  Dave was a people person who never met a stranger.  He enjoyed his daily breakfasts with his friends and fellow retirees.

Funeral services will be held at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3^rd St., West Terre Haute, IN on Thursday, December 14, 2023 at 1:00 PM.  Burial will follow in South Vigo/ Black Cemetery, with military rites provided by The Vigo County Honor Guard.  Visitation is scheduled for Thursday from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM in the funeral home.
