Delbert O. "Sam" Edington, 77, of Terre Haute, IN formerly of Newport News, VA passed away at 10:59 p.m. Friday March 24, 2017 in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He was born May 8, 1939 in Vigo County, IN to Carl Edington and Rhoda Roberts Edington. Survivors include: His wife Geraldine Hill Edington; one daughter Michele DeFelice and her husband Stephen of Atlanta, GA; one son Michael Edington and his wife Donna of Woodstock, VA. Also surviving are four sisters and four brothers: Joseph Edington (Shirley) of Marion, IN, Alfreda Thomas of New Goshen, IN, Gilbert Edington (Lois) of Hartshorne, OK, Ada Wood of Tampa, FL, Betty Thomas (Ed) of rural West Terre Haute, IN, David Edington of Hayworth, OK, Catherine Baldwin of Memphis, TN, and Stephen Edington (Lydia) of Terre Haute, IN. He was preceded in death by his first wife Lou Ella Dolen Edington; his parents; a brother Ivan Ray Edington; two sisters Martha Jane Bond and Wynette Sue Schafer; and four brothers-in-law Joe Wood, Shane Bond, Gary Schafer, and Wayne Thomas. He retired as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in 1992 after thirty one and a half years of service. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army three years and the U.S. Navy Reserve for six years. He was born in Vigo County, IN but lived in Newport News, VA from 1960 to 2007. After the death of his first wife in 2006, he returned to Vigo County and settled in the Terre Haute area. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of West Terre Haute. While living in Virginia, he was a member of the Denbigh Baptist Church. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church Of West Terre Haute, 205 S. 5th St., West Terre Haute, IN 47885, with Pastor Jeff Augustus officiating. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, VA at a later date. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 N. 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN. and also one hour prior to services in the church Wednesday. The family kindly suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of West Terre Haute with envelopes available.
