James Gordon Pennell Sr., 72, of Terre Haute passed away at 7:30 p.m. Monday October 30, 2017 in Union Hospital at Terre Haute. He was retired as a Truck Driver beginning his driving career with Piggy Back and later with Commercial Lovelace, and Distributors Terminal both at Terre Haute. He was born April 26, 1945 at Terre Haute to William David Pennell and Helen Vester Pennell. Survivors include: His Wife Sue Ella Day Pennell whom he married on October 14, 1965 in West Terre Haute; three sons James G. Pennell Jr., Garold L. Pennell and his wife Michelle, and Mark A. Pennell; two daughters Diana Smerage and her husband Paul, and Patricia Cesinger and her husband Bill; two sisters Judy Thompson and her husband Loyd and Frances Walters; two brothers and sisters-in-law Howard and Mary Ruth Pennell and Verlin and Carolyn Pennell; thirteen grandchildren Heather Compton, Jessica Pennell, Jennifer Pennell, Stacy Wills, James G. Pennell III, Molly Dispennett, Heaven Turner, Alyssa Targett, Andrew Gallagher, Kayla Pennell, Mark A. Pennell Jr., Gracie Pennell, and Luke Pennell; thirteen great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Eugene Pennell and Bill Pennell; and two sisters Betty Fields and Gloria Haskett. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 144 at Terre Haute where he served as a union steward. He was a member of the West Terre Haute Volunteer Fire Department in the 1970's. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home with Pastor Paul Smerage officiating. Burial will be in New Harmony Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday and prior to services Friday.
