James L. Surber, 76 of Terre Haute, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 in his residence. He was born in Terre Haute on June 17, 1942 to James E. Surber and Mary Loretta Shimshak Surber.
Jim was a 1960 graduate of Valley High School and received the Pete Whitesell outstanding athlete award and was a 1990 inductee into the Softball Hall of Fame. He was a member of Dresser Church, life member of both the Marine Corps League and the Silent Men’s Club, as well as being a member of the West Terre Haute Sons of the American Legion Post # 501, and the Terre Haute Elks Lodge # 86. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, fishing, bowling and softball.
He is survived by his wife Darla Denny Surber, son James Jeffery Surber and daughter Shala Ingle (Paul), a step-son Gene Dooley (Nancy), and step-daughter Bobbie Ketner (Mike). Also surviving are his grandchildren; Dylan Ingle, Makenzie Smokstad, Seth Meads, Cameron Meads, Daniel Dooley, and Hannah Ketner, as well as his great grandchildren; Greyson Meads, Jayce Trout, and Jaxson Trout. He also leaves behind his aunt, Norma Ramsey, nephews Mark Wiggins, Mike Wiggins (Darla), Tony Taparo (Melissa), and niece Michelle Rauch (Tim), a sister-in-law, Marge Wiggins and a brother-in-law, Dennis Taparo. He was preceded in death his sister Judy Taparo, and a brother, John Wiggins.
Funeral services will be held at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 1:00 PM, with Pastor Buddy White officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Saturday from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the funeral home.
