John H. Hackett, 80 of West Terre Haute, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at Union Hospital. He was born in Indianola, IL on January 29, 1940 to Howard Hackett and Dorothy Porter Hackett.
John is survived by his wife Emine Cankurt Hackett and their three sons; Bruce Hackett, (Gabby), John Hackett (Sherri), and Robert Hackett (Patricia), as well as six grandchildren; Ashley Waite, Kristen Hackett, Emilee Hackett, Kraig Hackett, Kyle Hackett, and Matthew Hackett. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as two brothers and one sister.
John was born to the greatest generation and served honorably as a retired veteran of the United States Marine Corps and Air Force, having retired in 1977. His various tours of duty across the globe allowed him to serve as an early warning signal communication specialist in Turkey during the Cold War. His civil service with the United States Navy included working as a cryptographer and his duty to his country spanned 40 plus years. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in West Terre Haute. His passion was shooting, boar hunting, military history, genealogy research and he loved the Turkish culture.
In keeping with John’s wishes, cremation has been chosen with a private entombment of his ashes at Roselawn Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd St., West Terre Haute, IN.
