Our dear mother, Nita McCallum, sadly passed away on Jan 18, 2025, at the age of 81 in Terre Haute, Indiana. She was born in Chrisman, Illinois on November 11, 1943, to Roscoe and Vernita Witt. She was married to the love of her life, William (Bill) McCallum, for 36 years, who passed away November 5, 2018.
She was the most wonderful mother and grandmother who was always there when we needed her the most, offering support, wisdom, and love in abundance. She retired from Terre Haute First Financial at a younger age so enjoyment could be had while following her youngest son’s baseball years. Her greatest joys were spending time spoiling her grandchildren, vacationing with family and friends, dancing in the kitchen with her “hunky husband”, playing bunco for 50 years with lifelong friends, shopping with her daughter and granddaughters, landscaping with her son, decorating, and preparing meals, while holding the title of fried chicken and pie expert in the family. Nita was a member of First Christian Church of Brazil and also attended West Side Community Church in West Terre Haute.
During her final years, she was very involved in her home at Westminster Village with socializing, decorating, landscaping, and playing cornhole. She spent her final months at Westminster’s Nursing Facility battling with the late stages of Lewy Body Dementia, while gaining her caregiver’s love.
Leaving behind a legacy of kindness and strength, mom touched the lives of all who knew her. Nita is survived by her three children, Derrick Thomas (Karen), Simone Voils (Billy), and James McCallum (Kari). She is also survived by grandchildren: Taylor Ramsey (Ryan), Nathan Thomas (Brooke), Lauren Ramsey (Hunter), soon to arrive; Tate William McCallum, and Jaden Voils. Great-grandchildren include Cora Sullivan, Ty Sullivan, and Luke Sullivan. She leaves behind three sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and an abundance of friends, who felt her warmth and fun-loving personality.
Nita was preceded in death by her husband; Bill McCallum, her parents; Roscoe and Vernita Witt, and one brother; Phillip Witt.
A special thank you is given to Westminster Village’s Nursing Center and to Heart to Heart of Hospice for the compassion during her difficult days. Thank you to Pastor Chris Wilbur for praying with mom and the support of Fitzpatrick’s Funeral Home. To follow mom’s wishes; in lieu of funeral services, Nita will be cremated and her family will commemorate her incredible journey and celebrate the love she spread, by having a celebration of life held at a later date.
Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd Street, West Terre Haute, Indiana, 47885 was entrusted with arrangements.
