Wanita Mae Hewitt, 92, passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at 9:19 AM in Union Hospital. She was born in Terre Haute, IN to Maude E. Smith Cook and Marvin Cook on March 22, 1926. She married Willard E. Hewitt on August 2, 1947. They had five children.
Prior to marriage, Wanita worked for several years as a seamstress. In future years, she took great pride in sewing for her children and grandchildren. Besides sewing, she was often found doing various crafts and creating cards on her computer to send as encouragement for friends and family.
Wanita committed her life to Jesus Christ as a child and was the oldest living member of 8th Avenue Baptist Church in Terre Haute. She served in a variety of ways through the years, including kitchen and dinner organizer as well as deaconess. It was because of her strong faith that she was an example to her family and those she met on how to face adversity with contentment and a positive spirit, even ministering to other patients at the rehab facility.
Wanita was preceded in death by her parents and husband Willard, and two brothers, Joe Cook and Glen Cook. She is survived by her five children, Sandy Shepard (Denny), Tim Hewitt (Sandy), Marvin Hewitt, Jim Hewitt (Anita) and Mike Hewitt (Jami), as well as two brothers, Vernon Cook and Paul Cook, Wanita also leaves behind 14 grandchildren plus great and great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, 220 North 3rd St., West Terre Haute, Indiana on Tuesday morning December 11th from 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM with the funeral at 1:00 PM with Rev. Fred Harrison officiating. Interment will follow in South Vigo Congregational Cemetery (Black Cemetery).
